It began as a Spanish-language design/music blog in which I intended to have a sort of excercise in cultural dialogue with fellow writers, music-lovers, designers and other thinkers. It didn’t quite pan out like that, though. There was some participation in the form of an article on Latin American Noise music (in Spanish), by esteemed musician, sound artist and friend Jorge Castro, for which I am very grateful. Beyond that, though, there were many genuine intentions, but —sadly— not enough time, motivation, what have you…
As for my participation, it dwindled after a few months. In part because most of my energies were spent elsewhere; in part because I was hoping to share the load with other people.
After some time to reflect, in between some re-arranging of priorities and moving out of the island of Puerto Rico to live in Alabama (The Beautiful, indeed), I decided that this space is still useful to me. Whereas its previous incarnation somehow wanted to impart some twisted sense of wisdom, I’m now looking to estabish something closer to what my first thoughts on SUb was: an ongoing dialogue on design and culture that breathes and changes and argues with itself and grows in the process.
Of course, with my recent move to the states, I think it’s a good idea to steer the conversation away from the decidedly regional themes I was touching upon before. Design as it relates to Puerto Rican idiosincracies is no longer a priority or main point of interest in my professional or personal life, and this will definitely have an effect on what I’m interested enough to write about. This shift brought upon by my change of scenery does mean that I will be writing mainly in English (as it seems to me a good idea that I write in a language my peers can understand), but Spanish-language posts may also be published every now and then.
